We are seeking a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join Landspítali University Hospital, with a start date of 1 November 2026 or as otherwise agreed. The position is full-time; however, a lower employment ratio may be considered by mutual agreement.

Our Department of Pulmonary Medicine consists of a strong and ambitious team of physicians managing a broad range of clinical responsibilities in close collaboration with other healthcare professionals. We are looking for a dedicated and motivated specialist who wishes to contribute to highly specialised care and follow-up of patients with respiratory diseases.

Main resposibilities

• Care of patients on hospital wards and in the intensive care unit.

• Outpatient clinics and day-ward services involving a broad range of pulmonary conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Interstitial lung diseases

  • Severe asthma

  • Lung cancer diagnostics and follow up

  • Advanced COPD and other late-stage obstructive lung diseases

  • Acute and chronic respiratory failure

  • Home mechanical ventilation and other ventilatory support therapies

• Performance of interventional procedures, including:

  • Bronchoscopy

  • Pleural procedures/thoracentesis

  • Exercise testing (cardiopulmonary excercise testing)

• Participation in the pulmonary medicine on-call service.

• Participation in acute internal medicine services, including on-call duties, as agreed with the Head of Pulmonary Medicine.

• Teaching and supervision of medical students, intern/foundation doctors, and specialty trainees.

• Participation in research activities.

• Other duties as agreed with the Head of Department.

Qualifications

• Specialist certification in Pulmonology/Respiratory Medicine.

• Icelandic medical licence and specialist recognition in Pulmonology, or eligibility to obtain these credentials.

• Broad knowledge and experience in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology.

• Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

• Positive attitude, flexibility, and strong collaborative skills.

• Experience in teaching and research is considered an advantage.

Additional Information

A full-time position is exclusively affiliated with the hospital in accordance with Article 3.3 of the current collective agreement between physicians and the Icelandic State.

The position is available from 1 November 2026 or by mutual agreement. The application deadline is 23 October 2026.
