For couples with children under the age of 18, an appointment must be made with the district commissioner in the district where one of the parents lives. The commissioner or his deputy shall, for example, record in the interview a position on custody, domicile and child support payments.

A request for an ending of cohabitation can be made online.

A childless couple ending cohabitation only needs to register a new legal residence with the Registers Iceland.
