Change of Address (Legal Domicile)

Notification of Change to Legal Domicile or Temporary Residence

  • Changes of address must be reported within seven days of moving. People 18 years or older must submit their own notifications.

  • A legal domicile may only be registered in an approved residential building, and if under construction, the building must have progressed to at least stage 4. Legal domiciles may not be registered in commercial buildings.

  • Exceptions to the rule above include people who register their legal domiciles at housing facilities for the elderly and disabled and employee housing facilities, as well as certified halfway houses and worker camps. In these cases, the directors of such operations are permitted to facilitate the registration process.

  • When moving between Nordic countries, the individual must always report their move in person to the appropriate office in the country they have moved to.

  • Reporting a change of address for a business or organization is handled through Iceland Revenue & Customs.

Remember that changes of address must be reported separately to Iceland Post.
