Can we get married today at a District Commissioner's office?

No, all the conditions must first be checked for compliance:

  • That one spouse is not a descendant of the other and that the spouses are not siblings. The same applies to an adoptive parent and an adopted child unless the adoption has been cancelled.

  • As a general rule, the spouses must have reached the age of 18 and must be legally competent.

  • A previous marriage must have been formally concluded, if the spouse was married before, by divorce. Those separated cannot remarry until divorced.

A marriage notification must be completed and submitted with accompanying documents.

If the spouses meet the requirements, A certificate of no impediment is issued with the endorsement of the marriage. A Certificate of no impediment costs 4,800 ISK.

A marriage ceremony has to take place within 30 days of the issue of the certificate.
