Before two persons can enter into a marriage, an examination must be performed to see whether the conditions for marriage are met. The District Commissioner of the Westman Islands is responsible for the nationwide examination of marriage conditions.

A marriage ceremony has to take place within 30 days of the issue of a Certificate of no impediment.

A Certificate of no impediment costs 4,800 ISK.
