To be eligible for a residence permit for students, you must be 18 years or older (exchange students may be younger) and be admitted to studies recognized as the basis for a student permit:

• Full-time study at a university in Iceland.

• Post graduate (doctorate) studies at a university outside of Iceland in collaboration with an Icelandic university.

• Exchange programmes under the auspices of recognised exchange student organisations.

• Intern training in cases where working in Iceland is part of your studies.

• Technical studies and recognized workplace studies at higher-education level.

You also need to:

• be able to show your identity with a valid passport.

• be able to demonstrate secure means of support.

• submit health insurance and criminal record.
