Should interns apply for a student permit or work permit?
Interns should apply for a residence permit for students. With the application you need to submit the following documents:
Confirmation of enrolment at a university, stating that work in Iceland is part of the programme.
A statement describing the internship and its purpose.
Original copy of an application for a work permit for students. The application must be confirmed by the relevant trade union and signed by the applicant and the employer.
Original copy of an employment contract with an Icelandic company. The contract must entail information on the terms of employment and wages, which must meet the statutory minimum wage terms. An employment contract must be signed by the applicant and the employer.
The Directorate of Immigration forwards applications for work permits and employment contracts to the Directorate of Labour for further processing.
