Directorate of Immigration: Residence permits - Types
How long may I stay abroad when I have a permanent residence permit
You may not stay abroad for more than 18 months over a four-year period. After that, the Directorate of Immigration may decide to revoke the permit.
Exemptions can be made if you need to:
undergo military or other related service in their home country,
stay temporarily abroad for work or education of yours or that of your spouse,
stay abroad with a spouse, partner, mother or father who is in an employee of the Icelandic state or an employee of an international organization or
stay abroad because of a temporary illness of yours or a close family member.
You can read more about your rights and obligations on the Directorates website.
