Directorate of Immigration: Residence permits - Types

Can I apply for a residence permit for a family member under the age of 18?

There are certain conditions that you and the child must meet in order to be granted a residence permit for a child.

All applicants for a residence permit have to fulfil certain general requirements. When applying for a residence permit for a child both parent and child also have to fulfil specific requirements. The child must be under 18 years old, live with the parent, and the child must be in the custody and dependent on the parent.

A parent living in Iceland must therefore have both custody and be the biological or adoptive parent of the child. A custodial parent who is not the biological parent of a child cannot obtain a residence permit for the child unless they have adopted the child. It should be kept in mind that the adoption must comply with Icelandic adoption laws in order to be considered valid.

Additionally, written consent from the custodial parent who does not reside in Iceland must accompany the application if parents share custody. The document needs to confirm that the custodial parent agrees to the child moving to Iceland.
