Requirements


All applicants for a residence permit must

  • prove their identity with a valid passport

  • give correct information about their purpose of stay in Iceland

  • meet the following basic requirements


Special requirements for a children's permit

  • The child is younger than 18 years old.

    • Please note that the child must be younger than 18 when the application is submitted. However, the permit may granted after the child has turned 18.

  • The child has a parent that lives in Iceland og meets the criteria below.

  • The child is in the custody of and provided for by the parent it want to be reunited with in Iceland.

A person holding custody of a child without being its biological parent, does not have the right to family reunification for the child unless having also adopted the child.

The adoption procedure must be completed before an application is submitted and the procedure must be in conformity with Icelandic law. An individual living in Iceland and intending to adopt a child from abroad must obtain the prior consent of the district commissioner; cf. Act no. 130/1999 on Adoption.

  • The child will live with its parent in Iceland.

  • If both parents have custody of the child, the parent who is not applying for family reunification must agree to the child receiving a residence permit in Iceland.
