Directorate of Immigration: Citizenship
May I owe the bank, but not the tax?
Yes. Among the conditions for obtaining Icelandic citizenship is that you have not had an unsuccessful attachment been made in your property in the past three years, that your estate has not been accepted for liquidation and that you are not in arrears on tax payments.
This does not prevent you from owing the bank, for example because of an overdraft or housing credit, or other credit institutions such as the Icelandic Student Loand Fund.
