Cross-border health insurance
With health insurance, you get help to protect your health and equal access to health care regardless of your financial situation.
You must apply for health insurance when you move to Iceland. Those who move to Iceland from countries other than the Nordic countries or EEA countries generally have to wait 6 months before they become covered by health insurance in Iceland.
From an EEA country
Travellers pay the same fee as health insured individuals in Iceland if they present the European Health Insurance Card as well as a passport confirming the person's citizenship.
Travellers from other countries outside the EEA
Citizens of countries outside the EEA pay a fee for the services determined in the regulation on health services for those who are not covered by health insurance.
Health insured individuals in Iceland who do not speak Icelandic or use sign language are entitled to interpretation services paid for by Iceland Health.
The interpreting service is there to assist them in understanding information about health and public health services.
A healthcare professional assesses the need for interpreting services and organises the use of the services.
Iceland Health can contribute to the cost of predetermined medical treatment abroad if:
It is not possible to get the treatment in Iceland
There is too long a wait for treatment in Iceland
An individual wishes to avail himself of medical services in another EEA country
An S1 certificate is a confirmation of an individual's health insurance in the previous country of residence. By applying for an S1 certificate, an individual becomes covered by health insurance in their new country of residence and receives the same services as other health insured individuals in that country. However, the individual also continues to be covered by health insurance in Iceland.
