Co-payment system - what do you have to pay for health care?
The co-payment system of Iceland Health ensures that individuals do not pay more than a certain maximum amount each month for health services.
Individuals can review their payment status under Health in My pages.
Payments
Maximum payment
General fee from: 34.950 ISK
Elderly, disabled persons and individuals receiving rehabilitation pension from the Social Insurance Administration: 23.301 ISK
Children 2-18 years old: 23.301 ISK
Children under the age of 2 years: no fee
Children within the same family are considered as one child in the co-payment system.
Children under the age of 18 receive the service free of charge if they have a referral. Otherwise, 30% of the price list is paid, which counts into the co-payment system. Further details about referrals.
Monthly payment after the maximum payment is reached
General fee: 5.825 ISK
Elderly, disabled persons and individuals receiving rehabilitation pension from the Social Insurance Administration: 3.884 ISK
Children under the age of 18: 3.884 ISK
If you do not use health services in the following months, the monthly fee will be accumulated and added to the next payment. See an example of payment calculation.
Overpayments and refunds
Information on payments by individuals with health service providers is generally received by Iceland Health on a daily basis. If there is a short period of time between visits to the healthcare provider or more than one visit on the same day, you may find yourself paying too much, as your payment status has not been updated.
The co-payment system manages overpayments and recalculates the individual's balance. Repayment is deposited in your bank account and notification is received by e-mail. It is important to have correctly recorded bank information so that it is possible to repay.
If a bill is missing on My pages, contact your healthcare provider, as the account has not been submitted to Iceland Health.
