Participation in payment for dental care
Iceland Health participates in the costs of general dentistry for children up to 18 years of age and pensioners, other than orthodontics, according to Article 4 of Regulation No. 766/2024 and Article 20 of Act No. 112/2008, in accordance with the contract on dentistry and with the restrictions therein.
Furthermore, Iceland Health participates in the cost of necessary dental treatments due to serious consequences of congenitaldefects, accidents and diseases, see Article 10(1) of Regulation No. 766/2024 and Article 20 of Act No. 112/2008.
Children
Child: A person under 18 years of age.
Iceland Health pays all costs (100%) up to the age of 18 of both general dental repair and general anaesthesia in accordance with the contract on dentistry and with the restrictions stated therein.
General dentistry includes examination, analysis, X-rays, regular check-ups, dental repair, root fillings, periodontal care and dental extraction. The fee for facility fee in anaesthesia is excluded.
The annual arrival fee is 3,500 ISK.
The conditions for receiving health insurance are that the child is registered with a general dentist. The role of the general dentist includes calling children for regular check-ups as required by each individual, no less than every two years, and recording the condition of their teeth and oral cavity. He also takes care of their prevention and necessary dental treatments. This arrangement does not prevent another dentist from caring for the child.
You can register with your local dentist in the dental office or on My pages under Health - Clinic.
Young adults
Iceland Health pays 100% for necessary treatments with a dentist due to serious consequences of birth defects, diseases or accidents that occur before the age of 18 but are not professionally appropriate to be carried out until after the full bone development has been achieved. However, this authorisation is generally valid for no longer than until the age of 30. The dentist sends the application electronically to the Iceland Health before treatment begins.
Wisdom tooth extraction for young adults
Iceland Health are authorized to participate in the cost of removal of wisdom teeth if they have, or are likely to cause serious problems.
The wisdom tooth may be removed by surgery on the basis of Articles 6 and 7 for individuals 18 years and older with a payment participation of Iceland Health amounting to a grant based on number 501 in Icelandic Health price list of dentistry, without a prior approved application in the case of:
Impacted wisdom tooth with chronic pericoronitis or recent history of acute pericoronitis, when it is clear that the tooth will not be able to reach the normal position.
Impacted wisdom tooth likely to cause damage, or has caused damage to nearby adult teeth or their supportive tissues, or prevented their normal position.
The dentist will assess whether the conditions of Article 7(2) of Regulation No. 766/2024 are fulfilled. Therefore, the applicant does not need to apply for the grant, but the dentist will reduce the bill.
The price list for dentistry from 1.5.2025 can be found under Gjaldskrá og bótafjárhæðir (only available in Icelandic).
