Nutrition and special diet
Health insurance participates in the cost of vital nutrients and specialist diets if:
An illness or accident causes a great problem in the absorption of nutrients.
The problem is chronic (for at least three months).
What is subsidized?
Amino acid blend for metabolic defects.
Tube feeding (tube feeder) along with accessories and pump.
Accessories for intravenous nutrition.
Nutritional drinks, general and specialized.
Thickener for swallowing difficulties.
Protein restricted diet due to metabolic defects.
Peptide milk/amino acid mixture for milk allergy for children 0-2 years old.
What is the process?
A doctor, nutritionist or other health care professional assesses the need and sends an application.
When the application has been processed, information is sent to a digital mailbox on My Pages.
If the application is approved, it will be stated how much of the cost of Iceland Health subsidizes and how long the subsidy is valid. You can follow the status of the application on My Pages.
How do I buy the nutrients/special diets?
When you buy the product, you provide your social security number. The store employee will look up your ID number. You only pay your part of the cost.
Subsidy amount
The store sends Iceland Health an invoice for the item paid for by Iceland Health.
You can see how much you have left of the subsidy on My Pages under "Authorization now for withdrawal" after Iceland Health has paid the bills from stores.
The amount of the subsidy is based on a 3-month period. The subsidy for one month can therefore be higher than the maximum amount per month.
The 3-month period
The previous month and the amount that is unused there.
Current Month
Next month due to authorisation to take out a 2-month dose.
Receipts for purchases
If you paid for the product in cash, you can send a receipt to Iceland Health.
You do this through the Individual Data Submission. There, select "Assistive Technology and Nutrition Bills."
You can also return receipts to customer service.
You will then receive information regarding reimbursement of the part of the cost paid by Iceland Health.
If all of an individual's nutrition is around a tube, the individual will never pay more for a monthly portion than:
0-5 years: 9.000 ISK.
6-9 years: 17.900 ISK.
10-12 years: 26.900 ISK.
13-17 years old: 35.900 ISK.
18 years and older: 44.900 ISK.
Health insurance pays the rest of the cost for nutrition. If tube nutrition is part of an individual's energy supply, the amount paid for by Iceland Health decreases.
