Psychological services
Health insurance is authorized to subsidize psychological services under certain conditions.
An individual must receive a referral about the need for psychological services.
An individual must go to a psychologist who is under contract with Iceland Health.
References need to be from:
Healthcare. If a child or adult needs psychological services due to an anxiety disorder or depression.
A multidisciplinary diagnostic team or a child psychiatrist. If a child has severe mental, behavioural and developmental disorders.
Parents and guardians are advised to find out which psychologists are authorised according to the Framework Agreement to care for children with serious mental, behavioural and developmental disorders.

How long are referrals valid?
The referral is valid for 12 months after the first treatment session. There must be an active reference for Iceland Health to reimburse psychological costs.
How much is paid for many therapy sessions with a psychologist?
Children: Maximum 10 hours.
18 years and older: Maximum 12 hours.
In order to meet the growing need of young people for psychological services, emphasis is placed on giving them priority access to the services.
