Health insurance for Icelandic tourists abroad
Those who stay abroad for less than 6 months without moving there or starting to work there generally keep insurance in Iceland.
If a traveller must pay for medical services abroad, they may be entitled to reimbursement.
Note: Rules on travellers' right to medical treatment abroad do not apply in the case of predetermined medical treatment abroad.
Health insurance advises individuals to contact their insurance company regarding travel insurance. Such insurance pays for more than social security does, such as the cost of repatriation.
The cost of medical services may be included in the insurance offered by credit card companies when tickets are paid for with credit cards.
Travel within the EEA and Switzerland
A traveller in another EEA country enjoys certain rights to medical treatment within the public health system of the country in question. This refers only to essential services.
Health insurance encourages everyone to carry the European Health Insurance Card with them to pay the correct price for the medical services in the country in question immediately.
If the European Health Insurance Card is not presented to a service provider within the public health insurance system, you can apply for payment participation from Iceland Health when you return home.
Please note that Iceland Health is not authorized by law to be able to provide co-payments for air ambulances or repatriation of individuals between countries.
Travel outside EEA countries
Individuals insured by Iceland Health can apply for co-payment for necessary medical and medicine costs based on the length of stay in countries outside the EEA.
Please note that Iceland Health is not authorised by law to be able to provide co-payments for air ambulances or repatriation of individuals between countries.
Insurance Statement
Health insurance issues a special insurance declaration to individuals who are insured in Iceland but intend to stay abroad for a brief period of time in countries outside the EEA. It states that the person in question is insured by social security in Iceland and what such insurance entails. When an individual presents an insurance declaration abroad, he/she must pay the full price for the service and then apply for reimbursement.
Individuals who have citizenship outside EEA countries and are covered by health insurance in Iceland
A European Health Insurance Card is not issued to individuals with citizenship outside EEA countries, even if the individual is covered by health insurance in Iceland. They are issued a so-called insurance declaration when they travel, confirming that the person in question is covered by health insurance in the social security system in Iceland.
Essential medical services with a private healthcare provider
When necessary medical services are provided by a privately owned health care provider, individuals always pay the full price themselves but can then apply for reimbursement from Iceland Health.
If an individual has paid for medical services abroad, he/she may be entitled to payment participation.
Documentation
Copies of invoices from the relevant service provider (itemized).
Payment confirmation.
Health insurance is authorized to request additional documentation if necessary, such as confirmation of studies and a medical certificate.
It is important to request all documents in English. Iceland Health may request that individuals have documents that are not in English translated, and this cost is not reimbursed by Iceland Health.
