Application for the European Health Insurance Card
The European Health Insurance Card entitles you to healthcare in other EEA countries, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The cardholder pays the same fee for health care as residents of the country.
The card is only valid for services that are within the public health insurance system where they are provided.
Example: You become ill or injured in the EEA and need to go to hospital.
If you present your European Health Insurance Card at a state-run health institution, you will pay the same fee for healthcare as the national residents.
If you do not have a European Health Insurance Card, you will have to pay all costs. You can still apply for payment participation from Iceland Health when you return home.
3 years in general.
5 years for old-age and disability pensioners.
You can apply for a new card when there are 6 months left of the validity period.
The card will expire if you are no longer covered by health insurance in Iceland.
A card that has expired may not be used.
If the card is lost, you can apply for a temporary card that is valid for 3 months.

How much do I pay?
When you go to a hospital, health clinic or healthcare facility, you must pay for your medical expenses and apply for payment participation when you return home.
Additional insurance
It is possible to get additional insurance for travel from insurance companies or through the payment card with which the trip is paid.
Such insurance pays compensation for more than health insurance does, for example the cost of ambulance transport home to Iceland.
Insurance declaration for travel outside the EEA
Health insurance issues a special insurance declaration to individuals who intend to travel abroad to countries that are outside the EEA area. It states that the person in question is insured by social security in Iceland and what such insurance entails.
Please note that when the person in question presents an insurance declaration abroad, he/she must pay full price for the service but can apply for payment participation when returning home.
It is only possible to apply for an insurance declaration for a maximum of 3 months at a time, a total of 6 months over a 12-month period.
