Try to Seek Help as Soon as Possible
It's best for your health and for a potential investigation into the crime.
The first 24 to 48 hours after the assault are a critical time for collecting forensic samples if a decision is made to press charges later.
Evidence and biological samples can be used to support a case in court. Biological samples refer to substances from a person that provide biological information. Evidence from the location where the event took place and information from witnesses, if present, are also important.
You can seek help at the HSS Emergency Department regardless of the time elapsed since the assault to receive advice, support, and education. This also includes sample collection for infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, infections, or pregnancy.
You can be connected with a defense attorney if desired, regardless of the time since the assault or the decision to press charges.
