The Department of Laboratory Medicine handles tests in the fields of hematology, clinical biochemistry, and microbiology.

Samples

Blood samples are taken weekdays from 8am to 11am, and other types of samples are also accepted during this time.

You must book an appointment for a blood test at the Reykjanesbær health clinic reception by calling 422-0500 on weekdays from 8am to 4pm.

The fee for blood tests and other samples must be paid at the reception before the service is provided.

The HSS laboratory performs fundamental tests in the fields of:

• Hematology: This includes blood cell analysis, fluid analysis, coagulation tests, and blood gas measurements.

• Clinical Biochemistry: Biochemical tests are performed to diagnose diseases, assess disease risk, and monitor treatment.

• Microbiology: All common bacterial cultures are performed at HSS. Blood, stool, chlamydia, and tuberculosis cultures are sent to the Department of Microbiology and Virology at LSH for processing.

Samples (blood, urine) are measured and examined the same day or sent elsewhere for further processing. Therefore, results can be available immediately or up to a week later.

Most results from bacteriological tests are available after one or two days. If a sample needs to be sent to another lab for processing, it will take longer to get the results.

Results from tests are provided by the doctor who ordered the test, either by phone or by a specific agreement with the patient.

The laboratory is open on weekdays from 8am to 3pm.

The laboratory is a clinical service department, and tests are performed based on doctors' requests.
