Midwife on duty

Midwife Emergency Line: 422 0542

The Midwife On-Call Service is available 24/7, year-round.
It is important that women call ahead to book an examination.

Midwives provide antenatal care on weekdays from 8am to 4pm.

The birth unit offers round-the-clock service.

  • After delivery, parents are offered the option to stay in the unit for up to 36 hours.

  • Following that, a midwife may visit the new parents at home during the first week after birth.

  • In certain cases, mothers and babies may be discharged up to 72 hours after birth.

Decisions are always made based on individual circumstances in consultation with the mother and midwife.

Pregnancy-related issues:

  • Midwives provide care for pregnancy-related complications.

  • In more serious cases, women are treated in consultation with staff from the Women’s Department at Landspítali University Hospital.

Who can give birth at the HSS Midwife Unit:

  • All healthy women between 37–42 weeks of pregnancy with a normal pregnancy history and no major risk factors. See more at ljósmóðir.is.

Breastfeeding difficulties:

  • If problems arise with breastfeeding, women can contact a midwife directly at 422 0542.

Phone consultations:

  • Women can book a phone consultation via Heilsuvera if they wish to schedule antenatal care or receive advice during pregnancy.

  • For urgent matters, women can call 422 0542 at any time. This also applies if there are concerns about reduced fetal movements.

Contact is required if labor has started, amniotic fluid is leaking, or there is heavy vaginal bleeding.
