The Icelandic Transport Authority: Registrations

How does a foreign party register a ship/boat in Iceland and what documents must be submitted?

A foreign party who does not have an Icelandic ID number cannot own a ship in Iceland. If he/she has an Icelandic ID number, he/she may own a vessel, although he/she cannot own ae fishing vessels in case of foreign nationality of the party. When importing a ship, you must fill in a form on samgongustofa.is -eydublod and select New Ship Registration on the register. A bill of sale/title deed, certificate of withdrawal from the country from which the ship is proceeding must be filled in and accompanied. In the case of a new-building ship, a shipbuilding certificate (not a certificate of withdrawal) is required. Then the Technical Department must inspect the ship, register the authorisation of ownership, a bill of sale/title deed or the shipbuilding certificate as appropriate.
