Where and when to apply for an A1 certificate?
An A1 certificate must be applied for from the Social Insurance Administration (Tryggingastofnun). The application form “Application for a stay abroad for work purposes – A1” is available on the Administration's website, www.tr.is undir Forms of the Social Insurance Administration.
The application can be submitted:
Through My Pages TR,
or
by sending it to the email address inter@tr.is.
Issued A1 certificates will appear on My Pages TR.
The Social Insurance Administration encourages applicants to fill out the application as thoroughly as possible. If further information is needed, the Administration will make contact and request it.
If you are an employee temporarily working in another EEA country, your employer can apply for the certificate on your behalf. The certificate will then appear on the employee's My Pages.
If you work in more than one EEA country or are self-employed, you must apply for the certificate yourself.
It is advisable to apply for an A1 certificate before work abroad begins, as this can prevent double payment of social security contributions both in Iceland and in the country of employment.
The application process can take up to four weeks, so it is important to apply in a timely manner.
