Can I get an A1 certificate for the whole family?

No, an A1 certificate is only issued to an employee or a self-employed individual.

However, the application for an A1 certificate asks for information about a spouse and children if the family is accompanying the individual during their stay abroad.

The Social Insurance Administration then forwards the application to Icelandic Health Insurance (SÍ), which handles the issuance of an S1 certificate for the family.

The parties must be in a registered cohabitation or marriage.

An S1 certificate is a health insurance certificate issued alongside an A1 certificate if the planned stay is longer than 6 months.

The S1 certificate is issued by Icelandic Health Insurance.

Note: The Nordic countries are exempt from the issuance of S1 certificates because, in general, there is no reimbursement of medical costs between the Nordic countries under the Nordic Convention on Social Security.

If the stay abroad is shorter than 6 months, it is sufficient to have the European Health Insurance Card, which can be obtained from Icelandic Health Insurance.
