What is the validity period of an A1 certificate?

An A1 certificate is generally valid for up to two years at a time.

The certificate confirms that an employee or a self-employed person continues to be insured in their home country while temporarily working in another EEA country.

  • If it is clear from the outset that the period of work abroad will be longer than two years, it is possible to request an exemption to remain insured in Iceland.

  • The validity period of the certificate is clearly stated on the A1 certificate (insurance declaration).

  • It is possible to apply for an extension when the validity period expires, provided certain conditions are met.

Please note: If the employment relationship is terminated, residence changes, or other conditions change, the A1 certificate will become invalid.
