The employee or employer applies for an A1 certificate from the Social Insurance Administration using the form “Stay abroad for work purposes”.

The same applies to self-employed individuals and those hired through temporary employment agencies.

• The social security contribution must be paid in the country that issues the A1 certificate, i.e. in Iceland.

• It is advisable to carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

• If the stay abroad lasts longer than six months and residence is transferred, a request for an S1 certificate must be sent to Iceland Health for processing.
