Directorate of Immigration: International protection

What does an advocate do for applicants for international protection?

An advocate is a lawyer who speaks on behalf of applicants for international protection and safeguards their interests vis-à-vis Icelandic authorities while their cases are being processed.

The role of advocates includes:

  • Attending an interview with the applicant when called.

  • Submitting documents and statements on behalf of the applicant, as necessary.

  • Assisting the applicant in gathering health information, if necessary for the processing of the case.

  • Receiving decisions from the authorities on behalf of the applicant and giving guidance on the possible continuation of the case, such as appeals or the possibility of a voluntary return.

The role of an advocate begins upon his/her appointment and ends with a final decision at the administrative level.

Advocacy services are free of charge to applicants for protection. If you wish to choose an advocate other than the person appointed, you must bear the cost of the service yourself.
