Participation in payment for dental care
Dental corrections
Iceland Health participates in the cost of necessary dental corrections for children and young people. The grants for dental corrections are as follows, according to the current regulation.
Fixed retainer in one jaw: 310.000 ISK
Fixed retainer in both jaws: 460.000 ISK
Conditions are:
That treatment is with fixed devices (braces) on at least 10 adult teeth in a jaw
That the service is provided by a specialist in orthodontics
That treatment with fixed devices begins before the age of 21
That the person concerned has not previously received a grant for orthodontic treatment
Grants are paid to a orthodontist as soon as costs are incurred, until the grant amount is fully paid.
Dentists send applications electronically to the Iceland Health on behalf of their clients.
Pre-treatment and post-treatment rehabilitation
Iceland Health does not participate in the cost of the pre-starting of orthodontic treatment or the surveillance and repair of supporting appliances after the end of treatment.
Removable aligners
Iceland Health does not participate in the cost of orthodontic treatments with aligners, such as Invisalign.
Serious incidents
Iceland Health is involved in 80% of the cost according to price list and with the restrictions stated therein for necessary dental treatments and orthodontic treatments due to serious consequences of inborn defects, accidents and diseases.
Iceland Health pays 95% of the costs according to price list with the limitations stated therein for necessary and timely dental treatments and orthodontic treatments for serious consequences of congenital defects and diseases specified in Article 12 of Regulation 766/2024.
It is necessary to apply for the Iceland Health contribution for this before treatment, other than emergency treatment, begins. Dentists send applications to Iceland Health for their clients.
Travel expenses for orthodontic treatments
Four trips may be taken in a calendar year for long trips that are made from 01.07.2024. The condition is that the person concerned receives a grant for orthodontic treatment.
An individual must submit a confirmation of arrival/dental bill from a specialist, along with receipts for travel expenses.
If a trip has been used for treatment by other parties within the healthcare system, this reduces the rights to travel for the orthodontic treatment. Travel costs are never fully reimbursed, that is the patient share in each trip, see Regulation 1140/2019.
Repeated trips are permitted for the most serious cases and an application must be made by a specialist in orthodontics.
