Dental damage due to accidents and assaults
If a dental damage occurs, it is important to report it.
The injured person or the guardian of the child shall inform his insurance company of the damage.
A dentist who first treats an individual after an accident sends a certificate of injury to the Iceland Health.
Accidental damage
Firstly, check if insurance company offers compensations for dental damage.
If compensation is not proven to be paid by a third party, such as an insurance company, the Iceland Health shall pay for treatment, following application.
If damage is liable by Iceland Health, Iceland Health shall pay 100% of the costs for children under 18 years of age, but 80% of the costs according to price list with the restrictions stated therein, for dental treatments, other than orthodontics, due to serious consequences of accidents, according to Article 10 of Regulation No. 766/2024 and Article 20 of Act No. 112/2008.
The condition is that compensation for third parties, including insurance companies, is not proven to be paid and accident insurance under the Social Security Act does not compensate for costs.
Dental care, including orthodontics, for serious consequences of accidents
Iceland Health pays 95% of the costs according to price list, with the limitations stated therein, for necessary dental treatments and orthodontic treatments for serious consequences of accidents where four or more adult teeth, anterior to 12-year molars, are lost or the insured person suffers other similar serious damage.
The condition is that compensation for third parties, including insurance companies, is not proven to be paid and accident insurance under the Social Security Act does not compensate for costs.
Tooth loss in work accidents
Accident insurance rules apply to dental damage in work accidents. In serious cases specified in regulation under Dental practice, 95% of the cost of the dentist's fee is paid. See further information here.
Damage for physical assault
Dental damage due to assaults is not paid by the Iceland Health. Compensation for them should be applied to the aggressor or the victims compensation fund at the Ministry of Justice.
