Departments of the hospital
The pediatric ward has an inpatient ward, a day ward and an outpatient ward. The ward is located on the 3rd floor in the D-wing and is accessed through entrance D. Outside of working hours, the entrance is locked, but you can use the door phone.
The main task of the ward is the reception of acutely ill and injured patients.

The unit provides a wide range of services. These include nurse-led clinics, such as wound care and follow-up appointments after treatment in the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit or following discharge from inpatient wards. The unit also provides fracture follow-up clinics and specialist outpatient clinics led by general surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, and obstetricians and gynaecologists.
A minor procedures room is used for a variety of examinations and treatments, including urological investigations, colposcopy, intravitreal eye injections, hand surgery, and other minor procedures. The main limitation is that procedures must be suitable for treatment under local anaesthesia.
The department provides treatment for patients with haematological disorders and cancer on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
On Thursdays and Fridays, specialised medication therapies are administered, including biologic medicines, monoclonal antibodies, and other medications. Various diagnostic procedures are also carried out, and patient education is provided.
The basis of the work is interdisciplinary teamwork in cooperation with patients and their families.

The maternity ward provides prenatal monitoring, birth assistance and postnatal care as well as examinations of women's reproductive organs, such as problems in early pregnancy or for diseases of the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

The psychiatric ward provides a wide range of services to adults with mental disorders in close collaboration with primary healthcare and other welfare services.

At the Medical Outpatient Clinic, specialised services are provided for individuals with a wide range of health conditions. The Medical Outpatient Clinic offers specialised consultations for patients with cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine, gastrointestinal, rheumatologic, renal, and memory-related conditions, as well as a nutrition team.

The Department of Internal Medicine is a 23-bed inpatient ward providing care for a diverse range of patients with a wide variety of medical conditions.
The Department of Internal Medicine is located on the first floor. Access is via Entrance B
The Medical Imaging Department performs and interprets diagnostic imaging examinations at Akureyri Hospital and also provides diagnostic reporting and specialist consultation services for the Healthcare Institution of North Iceland (HSN) and the Healthcare Institution of East Iceland (HSA).
The department provides imaging services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Services include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), general X-ray examinations, mobile X-ray imaging, fluoroscopy, ultrasound examinations, mammography, and bone densitometry (DXA). The department also performs selected image-guided biopsies and interventional procedures.
The Clinical Laboratory analyses patient specimens, including blood, urine, faeces, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, body fluids, and semen. When necessary, specimens are prepared and forwarded to other laboratories for further analysis.
The Clinical Laboratory operates during regular daytime hours, with an on-call service available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
The Clinical Laboratory comprises four specialist disciplines and is unique in Iceland for the breadth of laboratory services it provides. These include clinical biochemistry, haematology, microbiology and virology, and transfusion medicine (blood bank services).
The Clinical Laboratory also operates an outpatient blood collection service, while laboratory staff perform blood sampling on inpatient wards twice daily. In addition, specimens from other healthcare institutions are received and processed by the laboratory.
Patients in the surgery ward are either called in - i.e. their arrival is known, or are admitted at the the check-in center to undergo preparatory examinations and receive information on the panned surgery.
Some patients are admitted in a rush due to an accident, injury or sudden worsening of a disease.

The Operating Theatre is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of specialised healthcare professionals who are responsible for the preparation, delivery, and follow-up of surgical procedures.
The Sterile Processing is responsible for the receipt, cleaning, inspection, packaging, sterilisation, and distribution of surgical instruments and other reusable medical devices.
