Check-in center is operated within the surgery ward. Patients who are called in for surgery come there for preparation, research and information before surgery.
Objectives before a surgery:
nurse calls patients to surgery and immediately begins preparation and education, e.g. about the expected length of stay and planned discharge
ensure that the patient is medically ready for surgery. Review necessary investigations/monitoring.
observe equality in the waiting time of patients for surgical procedures
Nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists work in the anesthesia ward. Together they take care of the well-being of operation patients. The goal is to provide the best possible service and ensure the well-being and safety of patients during the procedure.
In addition to operating the surgery rooms, the anesthesiology ward services the emergency ward, medical imaging department, the psychiatric ward and the maternity ward. The anesthesiology ward is also involved in more specialized projects such as catheter insertion, resuscitation and pain services in other wards.
The ward's staff is actively involved in the teaching of medical students, nursing students, training of ambulance personnel and teaching CPR for doctors and nurses.
The waiting list is managed by the nurses at the check-in center. Admission is planned when an admission request has been received from the relevant specialist. The patient is called when the date of the operation is known, and the patient is then invited to the check-in center to prepare for the operation.
Patients who are on the waiting list for surgery can call the check-in center during telephone hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 13-14 and receive information about waiting times.

The pathology ward is responsible for the analysis of any tissue samples received by SAk. The wards service area is Northeast Iceland.
Biopsies received by the ward go through a certain processing process before they are ready for microscopic examination and analysis. All tissue sections are for example stained with a basic dye (H&E coloring) which stains the nucleus, cytoplasm and interstitium of the tissue. In addition, a variety of special stains are colored to show different properties and components of cells and intercellular material and are therefore important aids in diagnosis.
The average biopsy processing time is 18-24 hours. However, the priority samples are processed so that answers are received within a few hours or as soon as possible.
The ward is also available to the hospital's surgeons when cryosections need to be performed during an operation. A quick-freezing spray (-50°C) is then sprayed over the fresh tissue, which is then cut into micro-thin slices in a cryodissection machine and stained with H&E coloring. In most cases, a response is received within 15-20 minutes from the time the sample arrives at the ward.
All immunological stainings are sent to the University of Iceland Laboratory (RHÍ) in Reykjavík, but the pathology ward emphasizes good consultation and cooperation with RHÍ as well as laboratories around the world.
RHÍ pathologists take care of all autopsies, fetal autopsies and placental analyzes for the Akureyri hospital.
The ward employs a pathologist, two biomedical scientists and a medical secretary.
