Mental health services
Psychological services at Western Health Centers (HVE)
Psychological services at HVE health centers include assessment of mental health problems and psychotherapy for children and adults, both individual and group therapy. The focus is on the treatment of mild to moderate anxiety, depression and PTSD. Mental health care services are not a long-term solution for serious mental health problems.
Treatment is based on a limited number of sessions according to the clinical judgment of psychologists. Serious mental problems are referred to appropriate treatment options outside healthcare or to the HVE Mental Health Team.
HVE's psychological services do not carry out ADHD diagnoses, intelligence tests, developmental assessments or autism diagnoses.
Treatment options
The HVE psychologists' treatment option is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). HAM is a conversation therapy based on the premise that emotional responses are largely determined by our thoughts and beliefs. The treatment consists of examining the interaction of thoughts, behavior, physical symptoms and emotions. Emphasis is placed on changing the mindset associated with distress as well as dealing with the behavior that perpetuates the problem. The treatment takes place in regular sessions with a psychologist, as well as work between sessions. HAM is an evidence-based treatment, which means that the treatment has shown repeated success in studies compared to other treatments or no treatment, and is today an effective treatment recommended in clinical guidelines for many types of mental health problems.
References
A referral is required from a doctor in HVE's psychological services. However, midwives/nurses in maternity care and infant and toddler care can in certain cases also send referrals to psychologists within HVE.
Location
Psychologists' services cover all municipalities in the West or HVE's area of operation. Psychologists are based at their workplace, but psychologists are not located at all of HVE's workplaces. An attempt is made to accommodate residents throughout the region as much as possible through the location of interviews and through electronic solutions.
Cooperation
Psychologists at HVE work as part of multidisciplinary teams, working in collaboration with other professions of the institution as well as other institutions such as social and school services, the Children's and Adolescent Psychiatry Department of Landspítala, the State Diagnostic and Counseling Center and the Children's Mental Health Center and Child Protection.
Contact
Reception at each health center accepts calls (phone number at hve.is) and delivers messages to psychologists. A healthcare visit fee is paid for each session with a psychologist. The same applies to group treatments, but there you also have to pay a material fee for books.
