Protection of infants and young children
In the infant and young child protection program the emphasis is on monitoring physical, mental and social development of children and providing support and education as needed.
Heimavitjanir
Parents of newborn babies are offered home visits during the first few weeks. The number of visits depends on the needs of each family. In the home visits, a nurse or midwife examines the child, assesses its development, weight and head circumference. Parents receive advice and education regarding the care of the child and their own well-being.
Health care inspections
At the age of 6 weeks the child is first seen at a health centre by a pediatrician. At the age of 3 months vaccinations are started at the Directorate of Health. Regular check-ups and developmental assessments are carried out up to the age of 4 years. It is estimated that 2,5 year and 4 year-old check-ups will be carried out in the children's kindergartens.
Efforts are made to have continuity in services so that the child/family meets as often as possible with the same/same nurse/nurse and doctor.
Parents are always welcome to contact beyond these structured views. More information
