51% increase in the use of digital applications
The Ísland.is Application System is one of the most widely used services that Digital Iceland has developed in collaboration with the Icelandic national team in software development in recent years. In 2025, 576,0000 applications were sent through Ísland.is, which is a 51% jump from the previous year when the number of applications was 381,000.

People's expectations of being able to resolve their issues online continue to grow, and institutions in collaboration with Digital Iceland are in full swing to increase the number of service processes available on Ísland.is. In 2025, the number of digital applications increased by 68 during the year, and there are currently 356 applications available from 154 institutions, ministries and municipalities.
The most popular application last year was the change of ownership of vehicles at the Icelandic Transport Authority, 55,000 of these were processed last year. A new application for upper secondary education skyrocketed the numbers in the spring of 2025, with a total of over 9000 of them submitted last year. With it, the process of applying to secondary schools was greatly simplified for students, guardians and staff of the secondary schools.
Widespread use
The system is a powerful tool for transferring the application process for institutions and public bodies from paper or PDF documents to a more user-friendly digital interface. It covers all major types of public applications, thus harmonizing the user experience across institutions.
The Ísland.is Application System supports self-service applications but also enables users to monitor the progress of their applications in one place, anywhere and anytime on My Pages on Ísland.is. The system facilitates the overview of staff of institutions and public bodies, who now have access to application documents and the status of applications in one place, in a user-friendly way – as well as reducing both arrests and paper volumes
Diverse projects
There are currently around 300 application processes available on Ísland.is, including for:
Processing of certificates, such as applications for criminal record certificates, debt-free certificates and mortgage certificates.
Applications for permission , such as applications for permission to sit in an undivided estate, permission to plead before the district court and permission to privately divide the estate of a deceased person.
Changes to registration , such as applications for changes in the possessor or co-owner of a vehicle and deregistration of vehicles.
Receipt of enquiries, such as notification of a change of possession of a vehicle and a complaint to the Althingi Ombudsman.
Payment for services, examples of applications that offer payments are an application for deregistration of a vehicle, an application for a criminal record certificate and an application for citizenship.
Grant applications, such as an application for an electric car grant and an application for a grant from the Tourist Site Development Fund.
