Informational e-mails for driving instructors
20.12.2024
We would like to highlight a new information page for driving instructors that has just launched, where informational emails will be posted:
The electronic testing of ÖR-tests will commence unchanged on 1 February 2025. The work on the digital driving training book for increased driving licenses is in full swing and will continue in the new year.
As we wish you a happy Christmas and a successful year, we thank you for your cooperation during the year. We look forward to continued cooperation in the new year.

The electronic test for ÖR tests is scheduled to begin on 1 February. Questions have been turned to correct/false statements, as in B tests. The ÖR tests will continue to be translated into English and Polish, and alongside the electronic test, a translation into Arabic will be added. Preparations for the electronic test for A rights will begin after the end of the year.
Here you can see the test’s classification in categories and the number of claims in each category:
Category | Number of claims |
Traffic signal 1 Ban sign, signal, priority sign, warning sign | 8 |
Traffic signal 2 Special code, lane, information signs, roadmaps, service signs, other signs | 4 |
Traffic signal 3 ( Traffic signal ÖR) | 6 |
Priority - Traffic lights and police signals | 4 |
Priority - at intersection, right, rule, sign of priority | 4 |
Stopping and constructing | 2 |
Railways, unprotected road users, caution | 2 |
Driving licenses and public administration | 3 |
Vehicles and environmental aspects | 3 |
Light and signal use | 2 |
Speed and conditions, stopping distance | 2 |
Human factors | 4 |
General driving practices | 4 |
First aid and response at the scene of an accident | 2 |

The Akureyri ökugerði has now closed for the winter, so a temporary exemption for driving students in the north of Iceland will be activated.
We remind you that on 1 May 2025, exemptions, temporary and indefinite, will cease to be issued for studying in the field of driving. After that time, all drivers must therefore complete study in the field of driving before they pass the practical test in category B. There is now also a greater time to study driving after changes in the curriculum, but now the conditions are that drivers must have completed the driving school 1 and ten driving hours.
18.10.2024
Now a new page for driving test in category B has appeared. The page is intended to clarify the test implementation and its layout. It also includes examples of questions in each category. We hope that this page will be useful for drivers and that you refer them to it during the preparation of the test.
Having said that, we would like to report that we regularly take statistics on how each question on the literature test is published. We have changed the wording of questions that might be considered misleading and taken out individual questions. We have noticed that questions from the following categories have been appearing rather poorly and we do not believe that this is the fault of the wording or the questions themselves:
Response at the scene of the accident, first aid
Stopping and constructing
Traffic signal 2 (Other signals)
We think that this is an opportunity for driving instructors and driving schools to respond by focusing more on these categories in preparation for the test.

The application and driving course for increased driving rights are now in full process of being brought into digital form. The aim is for the application to launch at the end of the year and thus a digital driving course book. A review of test items in ÖR tests is also underway as well as a transfer to electronic form. The aim is for the electronic test subjects in increased driving rights to start in the future. Questions with three options are now converted to incorrect/correct claims, just as in B tests.
We have sorted the questions into the following categories:
Category | Number of claims |
Traffic signal 1 | 8 |
Ban sign, signal, priority sign, warning sign
Traffic signal 2 | 4 |
Special code, lane, information signs, roadmaps, service signs, other signs
Traffic signal 3 (Special signal for ÖR) | 6 |
Priority - Traffic lights and police signals | 4 |
Priority - at intersection, right, rule, sign of priority | 4 |
Stopping and constructing | 2 |
Railways, unprotected road users, caution | 2 |
Driving licenses and public administration | 3 |
Vehicles and environmental aspects | 3 |
Light and signal use | 2 |
Speed and conditions, stopping distance | 2 |
Human factors | 4 |
General driving practices | 4 |
Fast help | 2 |
We would like to invite you to submit proposals for claims that could be used as a test:
Examples of claims:
Vehicles and environmental aspects:
If the tell-tale for the generator lights up during driving and the thermometer for the cooling system shows rising temperature, it is likely that the air purifier is blocked
Driving licenses and administration:
Road Administration carries out road markings

The District Commissioner has asked us to pass on the following message to you for BE applications and electronic driving textbooks.
If you have applied in paper form and not through island.is (for example, you applied before the electronic process opened), then an electronic driving study book is not created and the teacher cannot record the hours electronically. Then it is just the same process as before.
That is, only those who apply electronically through island.is can complete the entire process electronically.

As was stated in a post sent to driving instructors earlier this year, the aim was to remove all exemptions from driving in a driving type for the practical test following changes in the curriculum. Now, driving students have much more time to complete driving in a driving type at the driving school Ökugerðin in Akureyri or Ökuskóli 3 in Reykjavík, so it has been decided that no exemptions will be given from driving in a driving type for the practical test, from May 1st 2025. Provisional provisions in the regulation on driving licences have therefore been extended for the last time and are valid until May 1st 2025.
We would like to recommend that driving instructors, and especially those who teach in areas where there was an exemption, inform their students about these changes.
It is also nice to report that the application for the BE qualification has become electronic, so drivers can now register driving time for the BE class electronically. A flip for the BE class was added to the interface that drivers know well for the B class and now you have to select the BE class at the top of the menu to get up the correct student list if you want to register practical lessons for the BE class.
