Post sent to driving instructors 17.07.2026
Last week we completed the digitalisation of the test for T-class, which means that the test for all categories of driving licences has become digital. The test for T-class is structured like the other tests, 50 claims must be answered correctly or incorrectly and 45 points are required to pass the test.
We would like to make a point about a light-use suggestion we received this week. It is important that teachers are a role model in traffic, but the suggestion concerned the fact that vehicles in traffic are repeatedly marked with a light-free driving lesson. We would therefore ask you to keep the idea behind your ears and remember to turn on the lights on the teaching cars that need to be.
Otherwise, we hope you have a good summer.

As stated at the information meeting on May 22, an increase in the number of errors allowed in the theoretical driving test for category B has been considered. It is hereby announced that a decision has been made to increase the number of errors allowed by one error and that these changes will take effect immediately today. As of today, a score of 45 points is required on the theoretical driving test for category B to pass it.

A few points from us
Driving School 2 remains valid after passing the theoretical exam.
Until now, it has been considered that Driving School 2 remains valid for up to 24 months, regardless of the theoretical exam. This has meant that there are always some test takers who experience Driving School 2 lapse between the time the person passes the theoretical exam and the time they complete the practical exam. In light of this, we have decided that it is most natural to base the validity of Driving School 2 on the theoretical exam passed. We have removed the conditions in the driving school book for Driving School 2 to be valid when recording the results of the oral and practical exams, and they can now be recorded even if more than 24 months have passed since the test taker completed their studies in Driving School 2.
ADHD and medical certificates.
We would like to remind students who are applying for a study permit that those who are on medication for ADHD must answer a health question regarding illnesses and medications in the affirmative and submit a medical certificate stating information about the medications.
Electronic application for extended driving privileges.
Work continues on an electronic application for extended driving privileges. We will inform you as soon as it becomes clear when it will go live.
Theoretical exams.
It would be a good idea to remind student drivers to make better use of the time they are given in the theoretical exam. They have 45 minutes, but all too often we see that only a fraction of that time is used. It is also possible to mark questions that they want to keep and come back to at the end. We would then like to reiterate to all of us to use the web quiz if it can possibly be useful.
Questions that come out poorly in theoretical exams.
Questions from the categories stopping and stopping, responding to an accident, first aid and traffic signs 2 are still coming out poorly in the theoretical exams, but we sent a tip on this subject last October. The Icelandic Transport Authority released a good video some time ago about the correct response at the scene of an accident:

Information about errors made by student drivers in theoretical exams.
If driving instructors would like more information about errors made by their students in theoretical exams, they are always welcome to call us during telephone hours (9-11) or send us an email and we will respond quickly. The student's name and ID number must be included with the mail. You can also contact Frumherji to get information about errors made in theoretical exams.
Theoretical exams - information pages.
We reiterate a page dedicated to theoretical exams in B-class where you can see the categories and examples of questions: https://island.is/oekuprof-fyrsta-bilprofid. A similar page also exists for the ÖR exams https://island.is/oekuprof-oer-prof.
Email sent to driving instructors and driving schools that teach motorcycles April 3, 2025
Dear driving instructors and driving school representatives,
On April 23rd, electronic testing for motorcycle theory exams will begin. The change will be that the exams for A1, A2 and A categories will be combined, i.e. there will be one exam for all categories, but this decision was made on the basis that one curriculum is valid for these categories.
The structure of the exams has been changed to be in line with the B-exam and ÖR-exam in such a way that there will now be 50 statements that can be answered true or false. One point is given for each statement and 45 points are needed to pass the exam, whether in the A1/A2/A exam or the AM exam.
There has been no change regarding language, A1/A2/A exams will be offered in Icelandic and English, AM exam will be offered in Icelandic, as before. It will be possible to use a web browser to get a reading in all exams.
The structure of the exams is as follows:
Flokkar A1/A2/A próf | Fjöldi fullyrðinga |

E-mail sent to driving schools that teach motorcycle courses 07.03.2025
Electronic testing in ÖR exams got off to a good start and as a direct follow-up, work has been done to bring theoretical exams in all motorcycle categories to electronic form. It is scheduled to begin on April 23rd.
During this work, it was decided to combine exams for categories A1 and A, since they follow the same curriculum.
The layout of the questions will be in the same format as in B and ÖR exams, that is, 50 statements that must be marked true or false.
Further information about the layout will be sent out at the beginning of April at the latest.
Sent to driving schools that teach additional driving rights on January 28th 2025.

We would like to highlight a new information page for driving instructors that has just launched, where informational emails will be posted:
The electronic testing of ÖR-tests will commence unchanged on 1 February 2025. The work on the digital driving training book for increased driving licenses is in full swing and will continue in the new year.
As we wish you a happy Christmas and a successful year, we thank you for your cooperation during the year. We look forward to continued cooperation in the new year.
2. december 2024
The electronic test for ÖR tests is scheduled to begin on 1 February. Questions have been turned to correct/false statements, as in B tests. The ÖR tests will continue to be translated into English and Polish, and alongside the electronic test, a translation into Arabic will be added. Preparations for the electronic test for A rights will begin after the end of the year.
Here you can see the test’s classification in categories and the number of claims in each category:

The Akureyri ökugerði has now closed for the winter, so a temporary exemption for driving students in the north of Iceland will be activated.
We remind you that on 1 May 2025, exemptions, temporary and indefinite, will cease to be issued for studying in the field of driving. After that time, all drivers must therefore complete study in the field of driving before they pass the practical test in category B. There is now also a greater time to study driving after changes in the curriculum, but now the conditions are that drivers must have completed the driving school 1 and ten driving hours.
18.10.2024
Now a new page for driving test in category B has appeared. The page is intended to clarify the test implementation and its layout. It also includes examples of questions in each category. We hope that this page will be useful for drivers and that you refer them to it during the preparation of the test.
Having said that, we would like to report that we regularly take statistics on how each question on the literature test is published. We have changed the wording of questions that might be considered misleading and taken out individual questions. We have noticed that questions from the following categories have been appearing rather poorly and we do not believe that this is the fault of the wording or the questions themselves:
Response at the scene of the accident, first aid
Stopping and constructing
Traffic signal 2 (Other signals)
We think that this is an opportunity for driving instructors and driving schools to respond by focusing more on these categories in preparation for the test.
08.10.2024
The application and driving course for increased driving rights are now in full process of being brought into digital form. The aim is for the application to launch at the end of the year and thus a digital driving course book. A review of test items in ÖR tests is also underway as well as a transfer to electronic form. The aim is for the electronic test subjects in increased driving rights to start in the future. Questions with three options are now converted to incorrect/correct claims, just as in B tests.
We have sorted the questions into the following categories:
Category | Number of claims |
Traffic signal 1 | 8 |
Ban sign, signal, priority sign, warning sign
Traffic signal 2 | 4 |
Special code, lane, information signs, roadmaps, service signs, other signs
Traffic signal 3 (Special signal for ÖR) | 6 |
Priority - Traffic lights and police signals | 4 |
Priority - at intersection, right, rule, sign of priority | 4 |
Stopping and constructing | 2 |
Railways, unprotected road users, caution | 2 |
Driving licenses and public administration | 3 |
Vehicles and environmental aspects | 3 |
Light and signal use | 2 |
Speed and conditions, stopping distance | 2 |
Human factors | 4 |
General driving practices | 4 |
Fast help | 2 |
We would like to invite you to submit proposals for claims that could be used as a test:
Examples of claims:
Vehicles and environmental aspects:
If the tell-tale for the generator lights up during driving and the thermometer for the cooling system shows rising temperature, it is likely that the air purifier is blocked
Driving licenses and administration:
Road Administration carries out road markings

The District Commissioner has asked us to pass on the following message to you for BE applications and electronic driving textbooks.
If you have applied in paper form and not through island.is (for example, you applied before the electronic process opened), then an electronic driving study book is not created and the teacher cannot record the hours electronically. Then it is just the same process as before.
That is, only those who apply electronically through island.is can complete the entire process electronically.
04.09.2024
As was stated in a post sent to driving instructors earlier this year, the aim was to remove all exemptions from driving in a driving type for the practical test following changes in the curriculum. Now, driving students have much more time to complete driving in a driving type at the driving school Ökugerðin in Akureyri or Ökuskóli 3 in Reykjavík, so it has been decided that no exemptions will be given from driving in a driving type for the practical test, from May 1st 2025. Provisional provisions in the regulation on driving licences have therefore been extended for the last time and are valid until May 1st 2025.
We would like to recommend that driving instructors, and especially those who teach in areas where there was an exemption, inform their students about these changes.
It is also nice to report that the application for the BE qualification has become electronic, so drivers can now register driving time for the BE class electronically. A flip for the BE class was added to the interface that drivers know well for the B class and now you have to select the BE class at the top of the menu to get up the correct student list if you want to register practical lessons for the BE class.
E-mail sent to driving schools that teach additional driving rights , January 29th 2025
For a reason, we would like to reassure you that when electronic testing for ÖR tests begins (from next Friday), it will be necessary for candidates to present driving training books for testing.
It will not be possible to allow subjects who show up without printed and completed driving training books to tire out of exams and those subjects will be expelled from exams.
We ask you to pass this information on to your driving students.
