The price for a permanent driving license is ISK 8,600 the payment is part of the application process.

The process of an applicant applying for a permanent licence electronically after a driving instructor has confirmed that the driving assessment has been carried out.

The following is a screenshot of the process and a short caption for each screen.

  • Here is an overview of what a student needs to know about
    information gathering. The student ticks "I have familiarized myself with the above" and selects then "Continue".

  • Here you get an overview of the conditions for the application that require action in order to begin an application

  • All the conditions must be met to continue

  • Here an image is retrieved if it exists and the choice is made whether the person wants to use the current image or bring a new one.

  • If no picture exists, the automated selection is "I will bring a new photograph to the district commissioner".

  • The name of the applicant appears at the top. The choice is "Delivery", which is the district commisioner´s office where the provisional certificate is surrendered and the final certificate is delivered

  • A health declaration is completed by ticking Yes or No. You have to answer all the questions in order to continue.

  • Here you get a summary of the documentation and you need to tick the 'I bring a doctor's certificate' box if the health declaration is required and tick 'I bring a picture' if the department does not have a picture or if the person wants to change an image.

  • The name of the driving instructor appears under "Driving instructor"

  • The end of the card shows the cost, ISK 8,600 and when you choose 'Continue', you go to the payment process.

  • The applicant fills in payment information and clicks 'Pay'. Following this is a summary of the payment. It selects "Forward" to go to the final screen.

  • Depending on the data the applicant needs to submit, four possible final screens will be displayed. This first shall arise if the applicant does not have to submit any documents to the district commissioner. The license is then directly placed on order and must be retrieved by the elected sheriff's office in 3-4 weeks. Also remember to surrender the provisional when retrieving the permanent license.

  • A post with the same information is also sent to the applicant.

  • If the applicant needs to submit a medical certificate from a general practitioner, this final screen will be displayed.

  • If the applicant must submit both a photograph and a medical certificate, this final screen will be displayed.

Here the application for a full certificate is completed. If the person in question needs to submit additional documentation, this is done by a district commissioner. Otherwise, a certificate is ordered and ready for delivery in three weeks from the district commissioner chosen by the applicant in the process. Remember to surrender the provisional license when retrieving the new certificate.
