Requirements for a full driving licence

If you meet the requirements, you can apply for a full driving licence online using the application above.
To apply, you must:

• have held a provisional driving licence for at least one year

• have completed a driving assessment with a driving instructor

• have completed Driving School 3

• have adequate vision, hearing, and physical and mental fitness to drive

• have permanent residence in Iceland

• have received no penalty points for traffic violations and not had your driving licence revoked in the past 12 months

Application process

Log in using electronic ID and complete the application.

• You can use your photo and signature from the national ID register, provided the photo meets the age requirements, or use an existing photo from the driving licence register.

  • If you have changed your name or gender, you must renew your ID before you can use a photo from the national ID register. Alternatively, you can provide a new photo and signature at a District Commissioner's office.

  • Individuals who do not meet the requirements for the issuance of Icelandic identity documents must submit a photograph.

• If you answer yes to one or more health-related questions, you must submit a medical certificate from your general practitioner as part of the application process. The certificate will be reviewed before your driving licence is ordered.

If your provisional driving licence is about to expire and you have penalty points or do not meet the requirements for a full licence, you can apply to renew your provisional licence at a District Commissioner's office. The new provisional licence will be valid for another three years.

Cost

You must pay the driving instructor for the driving assessment according to their fees.
A full driving licence costs 8.600 ISK. A provisional driving licence costs 4.300 ISK.
