Health insurance upon moving from Iceland

Retirement- and disability pensioners

Retirement- and disability pensioners who are staying in another country for a long period of time are obliged to inform International Affairs of Iceland Health.

If the stay is within another EEA country, the person must apply for an S1 certificate to the institution.

There is no right to participate in payments for healthcare costs in the country of residence to which S1 has been issued.

S1 certificate for pensioners from Iceland

Retirement- and disability pensioners who start residence in another EEA country are obliged to register in the country of residence if the residence lasts 6 months or more.

In countries of residence within the EEA, an S1 certificate from Iceland Health must be presented when registering with the health insurance institution in the new country of residence. A person will thus be covered by health insurance in the new country of residence and receive all the same services as other health insured persons in that country. The individual will however also continue to be covered by health insurance in Iceland.

S1 certificate for pensioners from Iceland

Elderly and disability pensioners who take up residence in another EEA country are obliged to register in the country of residence and apply for the S1 health insurance certificate from Iceland Health in order to be presented at the time of registration at the health insurance institution in the new country of residence, if the country of residence is within the EEA.

A pensioner who receives an S1 certificate can apply for such a certificate for spouses and children aged 17 years and under.

S1 certificates are not generally issued between the Nordic countries.
