Coastal fishing permit

• Each coastal fishing boat is permitted to fish for up to 12 fishing days each month.

• This applies to the months of May, June, July and August.

Fishing ban

• On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays

• On the following public holidays:

  • Ascension Day

  • Whit Monday

  • 17th of June, Icelandic National day

  • Commerce Day

• Fishing trip may not last longer than 14 hours.

• Only one fishing trip is permitted per day.

Catch limits per fishing trip

• A maximum of 650 kg in cod equivalents may be caught on each fishing trip.

• Cod equivalents are based on gutted fish.

Fishing gear

• The maximum number of handline reels on board is 4.

• No other fishing gear is permitted on board.

Notifications and equipment

• The captain must notify the Icelandic Maritime Traffic Service of the start of a fishing trip.

• It is mandatory to have an automatic remote monitoring system on board.

The operator of the fishing vessel in question is granted a permit for the area in which it is domiciled.

The country is divided into four landing areas:

• Area A: From Eyja- og Miklaholtshreppur to Súðavíkurhreppur.

• Area B: From Strandabyggð to Grýtubakkahreppur.

• Area C: From Þingeyjarsveit to Djúpavogshreppur.

• Area D: From Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður to Borgarbyggð.

• Catch logbook must be submitted before the vessel docks at the end of a fishing trip.

• All catch must be landed at the end of the fishing trip.

• All weighing must be completed on the port scale with up to a 3% ice deduction.

Reweighing is not permitted.

Exceptions

The Directorate of Fisheries may grant a weighing permit holder (previously fish markets) permission to reweigh if:

• it is an iced catch from a coastal fishing vessel, and

• the required equipment is used for weighing.

Conditions

• Coastal fishing catches may only be sent for re-weighing to parties licensed by the Directorate of Fisheries.

Parties with a permit

The following parties are now licensed by the Directorate of Fisheries to re-weigh coastal fishing catches:
