Parties in charge of the implementation of the law on taxis

The following is a summary of the main parties that are responsible for the implementation of the law on taxis.

Minister

Manages the overall administration and supervision of taxi operations in accordance with the Act.

The Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA)

Manages the implementation of the law and government orders issued under it. The role of ICETRA includes the issuing of taxi permits, supervision of permit holders and courses. ICETRA also operates an electronic database containing information on permit holders, taxi registration numbers and other related data.

The Consumer Agency

Monitors the price information related to taxi services.

The Police

If there is reason to suspect a violation of the Act, the police may initiate an investigation, either on their own initiative or following a complaint from the ICE

The police are authorized at any time to stop vehicles that are covered by the law and check how the transport is being carried out and whether it is in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Permit holders are required to comply with police instructions in connection with such inspections. If it is a permit required transport that takes place without the required permit, the police may order the vehicle to be stopped.
