Taxi driving permit

Individuals who want to drive a taxi owned or held by another taxi operator need a permit from the Icelandic Transportation Authority (ICETRA).

The process

Supporting documents

It is important to submit all supporting documents with an application.

• Copy of driver's license (both sides)

• Recent electronic photo for the license (recent and clear facial image with neutral background)

• Confirmation of legal registration history – Certificate confirming registration history of legal domicile - island.is or National registry (Búsetutímavottorð)

  • If applicant has had a legal domicile registered in another country, a certificate from criminal registration from the applicable country/countries has to be turned in with the application according to point 2 in Paragraph 2 of Article 5 of the Taxi Act

• Individuals who are nationals of non-EEA countries shall submit residence and work permits

ICETRA has an overview of those who have completed the required taxi courses and will obtain information regarding criminal records from the Icelandic prosecution authority and therefore such documents do not need be submitted unless otherwise stated.

Processing of applications

• ICETRA issues a taxi driving permit that is valid for five years when all conditions are fulfilled and payment for the permit has been received

• When documents are missing or conditions are not fulfilled ICETRA notifies the applicant via email

Cost

• The cost of the taxi driving permit is according to the tariff of ICETRA and is 8.000 ISK.

• The cost of courses shall be determined by the tariff of driving schools

• Certificates and documents that are obtained from other institutions shall be paid for according to the applicable tariffs
