Culturally Sensitive Patient Education
When providing patient education, it is essential to ensure that information is effectively understood. Health literacy is defined as an individual’s ability to access, understand, and use information related to their health.
Research shows that one of the main reasons for poorer health outcomes among immigrants, compared to the general population, is limited health literacy. There are also indications that immigrants’ health may begin to decline soon after settling in a new country.
Contributing factors include reduced access to healthcare services due to language barriers, as well as limited or no access to educational materials in formats or languages that meet their needs.
Communication plays a crucial role in patient education. Knowledge of and interest in different cultures, along with respect for varying communication norms, are key in these interactions.
It is therefore important to keep the following in mind when communicating with or educating individuals who speak a different language and come from a different cultural background.
