About the department
The Microbiology and Virology Department is a research laboratory and reference laboratory for Iceland in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology. The department works with the Chief Epidemiologist and other health authorities to improve public health through research and documentation of infectious diseases, their causes, and spread. This data is also used for preventive measures, such as infection control and vaccination.

To maintain a quality management system that ensures appropriate handling, processing, and reporting of research on patient samples. The laboratory management will ensure that the ISO 15189 standard is met.
To create conditions that encourage the most qualified staff to seek employment in the department and motivate employees to take advantage of educational opportunities and participate in scientific projects
To provide education and practical training to healthcare students in accordance with the latest knowledge
