Special contributions with child

When a child resides with one parent permanently, the parents may request that the District Commissioner confirm their agreement on payment of contributions for special expenses in the life of the child. In the event of a dispute between parents concerning a special contribution, the parent where the child resides may request that the District Commissioner rule on the duty of the other parent to pay contributions for special expenses in the life of the child.

Special expenditure may be for:

• Baptism

• Confirmation

• The purchase of glasses for the child

• Orthodontic treatments

• Disease

• Burial

• Another special occasion

Contributions to special expenses differ from child support in that they belong to the legal parent, while child support belongs to the child.

Contributions for special expenses are intended to cover occasions in the child´s life that are special and not general. Regular child support should be used pay general expenses, such as food, clothing, housing, music education, sports activities as well as general dental repairs and ordinary health expenses.

Parents who have agreed on a split residence of a child may not request confirmation from the District Commissioner of a special contribution agreement or request a ruling by the District Commissioner on a special contribution.

You can apply to TR to get paid alimony, education contribution and special expenses contribution that has been determined by the District commissioner ruling, an agreement confirmed by District commissioner, a ruling or a court settlement. The condition is that the payee must live in Iceland. TR's payment of child support and educational contribution is limited to the amount of general child support, and TR's payment of special contribution is only for expenditure items specified in the Ministry of Justice's reference amounts and never a higher amount than is specified there.
