Specialisation of doctors
Applications
Specialist training positions at Landspítali are advertised according to a coordinated recruitment process for Landspítali and the Akureyri Hospital. Specialist training positions for physicians are advertised twice a year in January and September.
It is assumed that specialized medical students will begin their work in early March and end of June every year. New specialized medical students are required to attend the formal reception dates, which are announced when the time draws near.
Acceptance criteria
To be eligible for a specialist training position, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
Have completed a special education program or equivalent program approved by the teaching council of a special education program
That a doctor has a general medical license in Iceland
At least B2 in language skills in Icelandic applies to some candidates
All applicants who are eligible for employment are invited to interview the Chief Medical Officer and the Head of Teaching. They shall be unrelated to the applicant. The assessment of the medical officer's competence shall be objective and shall be based on at least the following factors:
A track record and an evaluation of it.
The grades of the official and standardized medical examinations.
Previous work in research, teaching and other projects of significance and included in the CV.
The comments and recommendations of previous instructors or employers.
Performance in an interview where the attitude, interest and knowledge of the applicant in the field of medicine is taken into account, as well as his view of his current and future position within medicine and imaging.
Dates of reception
New hires are invited to a reception day and there is an obligatory attendance. Receiption days are usually held in September and February.
The next orientation day will be on February 26, 2026, for those starting their specialist training beginning of 2026.
