Evaluation and Qualifications Committee
On August 16, 2023, Regulation number 856/2023 on the education, rights, and obligations of physicians and the conditions for obtaining medical licenses and specialist licenses, came into effect.
The Evaluation and Competence Committee is appointed by the Minister to implement this regulation.

The committee's staff member is Andrea Jónsdóttir, specialist at the Ministry of Health.
The Evaluation and Competence Committee for Medical Residency Training is appointed by the Minister of Health for a four-year term, from March 19, 2024, to March 18, 2028.

Role and Tasks
Article 22 of the regulation specifies the role and tasks of the committee, which are as follows:
Approve target descriptions for core residency training (pursuant to Article 18) and specialties (pursuant to Article 21).
Assess the suitability of healthcare institutions or their departments to be recognized as teaching institutions for conducting medical residency training, including core residency training, cf. Article 18.
Monitor residency training and teaching institutions as needed, at least every four years. This includes ensuring that residency training is only conducted at recognized teaching institutions, according to the target description, and that supervisors have completed and maintain supervisor training.
Prepare quality standards for:
the development of target descriptions,
the implementation and execution of residency training, and
the monitoring of teaching institutions and residency training.
These shall be in accordance with international quality standards.
Follow up on its decisions made in accordance with audits and quality management.
Make proposals to the Minister regarding which specialties should offer residency training in Iceland and what they should be called.
Organize and manage a numbering system for residents.
Provide opinions requiring the committee's professional expertise.
Ensure that a handbook on the implementation of medical residency training is published and updated regularly as needed, in cooperation with the Postgraduate Medical Education Council.
