The department examines tissue samples and organs to help diagnose diseases.

Most samples are prepared and studied under a microscope by specialist pathologists.

Test results usually take 1–4 days; some specialized tests may take longer.

The department also performs autopsies:

• Hospital autopsies help understand the cause and extent of disease.

• Forensic autopsies are done at the request of the police in cases of sudden or unexpected death.
