The MAD was developed by an international organization, International Collaborative for Best Care of the Dying Person, and is called the 10/40 model. The MAD is based on 10 key elements in the care and treatment of the dying person, but also looks at 40 quality indicators/factors that support quality and safety in the care and treatment of the dying person.
Diagnose that a patient is dying.
A conversation with the patient (if possible) and always with family and loved ones.
Fulfill spiritual and religious needs.
List of prescriptions for medicines that can be given as needed (PN) for pain, rigors, agitation, nausea and vomiting and anti-gravity.
Take into account the patient's interests when reviewing treatment and care.
Reconsider the need for fluid administration, including the need to start or stop fluid administration.
Reconsider the need for nutrition, including starting or stopping nutrition.
Discussion of all aspects of the treatment plan with the patient and the family/carer.
Regular re-evaluation of the patient's condition.
Be respectful and considerate in the care of the deceased.
