No general rule applies to resolution of such cases, and the Icelandic Transport Authority must address each of them. The requirement is that each vehicle subject to registration must bear a permanently registered vehicle identification number (VIN) . The VIN is thus a formal identification of the vehicle. If a vehicle is to be repaired or changed in a way that the VIN is damaged or removed, the registered owner of the vehicle shall apply to the Icelandic Transport Authority for the proposed repair or changes and have them approved.
