For a recreational craft of six metres in length and above, masters need to acquire basic knowledge of the safety aspects of navigation and have a valid recreational craft (pleasure boat) boatmaster's certificate. A recreational craft certificate can be applied for from the website of the Icelandic Transport Authority. Theoretical and practical examinations are required to obtain a certificate.
